Learn to Dance: The Manly Way to Dancing

By Hal Robbern

Women have it easy. When it comes to dancing, men can't win. While people applaud girls for looking like graceful swans on popular dance shows, men are getting mocked for their awkwardness (or desperation) on the dancefloor. Dance lessons seem like a total waste for brawny, dorky looking men with two left feet.

Sometimes even professional male dancers don't get better treatment either. A majority of people don't understand the point in this: a grown man in tights splitting and bending in weird directions. To them, its unnatural.

Unless its John Travolta. Now that dude can dance. Travolta's not as talented as Michael Jackson nor does he look like a polished dance instructor, but his moves are just downright sexy. He just 'flows'. 'Saturday Night Fever' made it okay for the average male to strut his stuff. If you want to learn to dance, and ooze that kind of sexiness on the dancefloor, here are a few tips for your DIY dance lessons:

1. Avoid ballroom dance attire/slicked hair at all costs. Unless you're a professional dancer competing in 'Dancesport', you don't need to look like a salsa dancer to prove you're a dance king. Dress a little finer than usual but make it look effortless.

2. Practice dancing to your favorite music. Pick out a really cool song and experiment. Reggae and R&B offer a lot of good dance vibes with their slow, steady beats. They can make you look smooth even if you're just bobbing your head around. Next, learn to dance with your hips. Elvis and Ricky Martin are famous for shaking their pelvis - women practically go into a coma just watching them perform.

3. Reel them in with your James Dean impersonation. Do this with a confident but mysterious smile. Practice your smoldering gaze a couple of times a day. This move is great for slow dancing.

4. Keep it simple. While your hips are the main attraction, your hands should still have something to do. Use them to clap or snap your fingers to the rhythm. Just don't do it too much or you'll end up looking like a dork.

Dancing isn't scary if you got some real man confidence. Get your cue from the beat and let your body do the rest. If you're having fun, dancing makes it all worthwhile. Women just love man who knows his way around the dancefloor. Try it for yourself!
