Will Favre Actually Improve the Vikings?

Brett Favre has done it again. Tricking the football world into believing he was truly retired this time around, he signed a last minute contract with the Vikings, worth a reported $25 million over two seasons. It sounds like those in the know already knew that Favre was coming back this whole time. While this will receive much hype, I don't think it'll improve the Vikings.

As a QB turning 40 during the course of this season, Favre is simply old. Very few quarterbacks can be effective at 40 years old and while Favre is tough, every body begins to wear down as it gets older. Additionally...

He's coming off some bicep surgery. He also has a torn rotator cuff. His body is obviously starting to give, and between the quickness one loses as they age, the strength they lose as they age, their increased recovery time, and their susceptibility to injuries, Favre seems like he has a high chance of disaster during these next two seasons.

Look at the way that Favre looked during the second half of 2008 with the Jets. So many picks, his injuries, and everything led the team to implosion. He threw 9 interceptions during the last five games of the season. While he'll obviously play over Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota, I have to say that Jackson's last four games consisted of just one interception.

Then there's the whole issue of team chemistry. It seemed like Jackson had a close bond with his wide receivers. This is a critical element to a team's success. Favre, on the other hand, is coming into a team that he doesn't know, missed an entire training camp, and will have no rapport with any of his receivers.

As far as the rest of the team goes, Favre doesn't seem to get along with his teammates these days either. Look at all of the incidents in New York, with Thomas Jones and Favre not having dressed with the team, traveled with the team, or anything else. He sees himself as better than his teammates and this won't bode well in Minnesota.

I understand where the Vikings are coming from. They probably won't contend without Favre. This will increase ratings, sell more tickets, and might give them a shot to go big this year, but I don't think he's the future in Minnesota and you have to wonder what they'll do after him.

To wrap it up, I believe Favre will not be a good addition to the Vikings because of his age/injury risk, his deteriorating arm strength and skills as a QB, and his inconsistency. Not to mention, he won't be able to develop any chemistry with his receivers, and if they don't win the Super Bowl this year, it would be a huge setback for the Vikings' organization. Honestly, it seems like Favre signed with the Vikings out of spite. Heck, just about a month ago, Favre said he wasn't going to play this season because "he didn't think he could perform at a high level." Uh huh. So what has changed? Aside from the fact that he now has a slight tear in his rotator cuff. While I still think Favre is one of the best QB's ever, I feel like this whole situation has somewhat tainted his brilliant career. I really do hope he does well because I don't want to see him fall flat on his face. I want to see him go out on top, but with Favre constantly "un-retiring," I think he never will.

Why Sampling Synthesizers Have Become So Popular

The advent of the synthesizer has revolutionized the creation of music. Since its inception, the synthesizer has developed into a much more useful and complex device than that which it started out as. These innovative instruments are capable of producing nearly all musical sounds. Several variations, including the sampling synthesizer, are available.

A sampling synthesizer is a type of synthesizer that stores sound samples in RAM and then plays each sound back based on how an instrument is configured. Unlike a general synthesizer, it does not produce sounds from scratch. The sampling synthesizer first starts with sounds being recorded from multiple recordings or with samples of different natural or instrumental sounds.

A sampling synthesizer (or sample based synthesizer) works differently from the additive or subtractive synthesis used in other synthesizers. subtractive synthesizers filter square or sawtooth waves to generate their sounds. Additive synthesizers assemble their sounds by adding together different sine waves.

The effectiveness of a sampling synthesizer is dependent upon the volume of the sample sounds it has since it uses these sound samples to reproduce sounds of natural instruments. The high price of computer memory greatly limited the number of sounds that a sampling synthesizer held when it was first developed, but over the years, as memory chips have become less and less expensive, the amount of sounds samples increased so that now there is much greater flexibility and quality to the instrument.

Sampling synthesizers store sounds as pre-recorded samples rather than sounds recorded in real-time and use less processing power than a digital synthesizers. This makes them a much better instrument than either an analog or digital synthesizer.

The sampling synthesizer has clear benefits over analog synths as well. Whereas an analog model must have a larger chip set in order to produce multiple waveforms at once, the sampling synthesizer does not. Thus, the polyphonic quality tends to be significantly greater in the sampling synthesizer.

Initially, the sampling synthesizer was incredibly pricey. With the introduction of models such as the Roland D50, the instrument began to become more mainstream and obtainable for the non-wealthy musician. The Korg M1 is another good example, particularly in that the workstation concept was here first seen.

A great early example of a mainstream artist utilizing the sampling synthesizer is Stevie Wonder. The chirping bird sample which was the primary sound of his song "The First Garden" was created with this instrument. So, you say that you want to stay in the nicest hotel in Las Vegas. Well there are a couple of options for you, as there isn't "one best option". A good place to start would be the AAA Five Diamond Award winning resorts. On Las Vegas Boulevard (or the strip) there is the Bellagio, Venetian, MGM Skylofts, the Four Seasons, and of course the Wynn.

When it comes to gambling and if you like to gamble high stakes, all of these properties can accommodate the limits you like to play (except the Four Seasons, as it doesn't offer gaming). However, most of the highest rollers tend to hang out in the Wynn, Bellagio, and Venetian.

The Bellagio hotel is the one remembered most for its elaborate fountain show outside of the hotel. This place is truly elegant, and screams of class. It has plenty of fine dining options, and really is a sight to see. While there, check out the Botanical Gardens. It is a garden display next to check in that changes seasonally.

The Venetian is an Italian themed hotel that puts an emphasis on Italian themed art and decor. Although it isn't as flashy as the Wynn, Bellagio, or Venetian, it offers a large variety of entertainment, dining, and gaming options to enjoy.

The latest design from one of the most well known casino resort/real-estate developers is the Wynn. Steve Wynn created the Wynn and its sister property Encore, and has outdone himself yet again. Wynn's previous projects include the Mirage, Treasure Island, and the Bellagio before they were sold off.

The Wynn, which Steve claims as, "The only hotel I've ever signed my name to" really has has a lot to offer its guests. In the Wynn, you'll find fine dining, the Esplanade Shoppes which feature some of the most famous brands in retail, to a golf course, and even a Ferrari/Maserati dealership! Around every turn you will find visually stimulating displays. The Wynn really puts emphasis on luxury and great service, and is a great place to stay in Las Vegas.

You will find all of these places stunning, and absolutely wonderful. Keep in mind if you are looking for $1 drafts or $5 blackjack you won't find it in these places. Be prepared to shell out a few extra dollars, but at the same time, if you can afford it the service and amenities in these hotels are second to none. Sometimes you just have to spoil yourself.

Ten Must Have Hiking Ingredients

Whether you will be dayhiking or doing a multi-day backpacking trip, these items will insure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.

Obtain a map of where you will be hiking. Usually, you can pick one up at the park visitor center or ranger station. You can also download maps from various websites. Having a good map will not only will not only prevent you from getting lost, but it can help rescuers find you if you suffer an injury.

Get yourself a good map reading compass. Using the map and compass together, you can orient your map to your direction and surroundings, choose the correct path and keep yourself on course.

Staying hydrated is crucial. You can survive about a month with no food, but only a few days without water. You can become dehydrated quickly by exertion, perspiration, heat and exposure. It's a good idea to have 2 one liter bottles of water. Also, carry some water purification means with you. I use a liquid water treatment drops.

It's possible to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Always have some extra food, enough for an additional day if you need it. Even having a few back up whole food bars with you should do the trick. Especially if they constitute meal replacement. You will have the extra energy with you just in case.

Having a few additional clothing layers will help you stay warm and dry. Depending on the season, temperatures can fall quickly around sunset. It's a good idea to outfit with synthetic clothing. A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Ultraviolet protection is really important. The suns rays can be damaging to eyes and skin, so bring a good pair of sunglasses, a small tube of sunblock and perhaps a wide brimmed hat.
